How do I extract subtitles from MKV or MP4 as SRT?
  1. Drop your video files onto this page, or select them from your device.
  2. Wait for the embedded text tracks to appear, then preview the language or track you need.
  3. Choose SRT under “Save as” and download a track. You can also choose WebVTT (VTT), or download all available tracks together as a ZIP.
Which video and subtitle formats are supported?

Text subtitles embedded in MKV files (SRT, ASS, and SSA), plus Timed Text and WebVTT tracks in MP4, M4V, and MOV files. You can download plain SRT or VTT with text and timing; original fonts, styling, and positioning are not preserved. Some videos have no subtitle tracks, or use a format this tool cannot read yet.

Does my video leave my device?

No. Your browser reads the selected files and creates the downloads locally. Videos, file names, and extracted subtitles are not uploaded or saved by LumenExtract. Keep this tab open while files are processing. Removing a file or leaving the page clears its results.

Can I extract subtitles on a Mac?

Yes. You can extract subtitles using a browser on a Mac, Windows PC, or Linux computer, without installing a desktop app. Use a current browser with JavaScript enabled and keep the tab open until processing finishes. Your video does not need to play in the browser for its supported text subtitles to be extracted.

Is this an alternative to MKVToolNix or MKVCleaver?

For extracting supported text subtitles as SRT or VTT, yes. This tool works in your browser without a desktop installation. MKVToolNix’s mkvextract also exports audio, video, attachments, chapters, and original subtitle formats. MKVCleaver is a desktop interface for mkvextract. Those tools suit broader MKV extraction tasks or keeping original ASS/SSA styling.

Can I extract subtitles using HandBrake?

HandBrake can burn subtitles into video or pass supported tracks through to a new video file. To get a separate SRT or VTT file from an existing text track, use this extractor. It reads the subtitle track without re-encoding the video.

What about burned-in or image-based subtitles?

Subtitles burned into the video and image-based tracks such as PGS or VobSub need optical character recognition (OCR). This tool extracts existing text tracks; it does not recognize images or transcribe speech.

Can I use large videos or multiple files?

Add up to 20 files at a time. Large videos are read in chunks to keep your browser responsive. Processing time depends on your device and file structure. You can cancel a file, remove it, or retry it without interrupting the other videos.
